Frank Leyendecker (1876 – 1924)

Frank Xavier Leyendecker, was born in 1878 in Germany. His family immigrated to the United States in 1882, settling in Chicago. As a teenager, Leyendecker apprenticed with Carl Brandt, learning how to produce stained glass art. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago before traveling to Paris at 18 with his brother, Joseph, to attend the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. Upon the brothers’ return to Chicago in 1898, they opened a studio together for a year before moving to New York at the insistence of their publishers. Frank’s illustrations were often featured on the covers of such magazines as the Collier’s Magazine, The Popular Magazine, Life Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and the Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker was also a member of the New Rochelle Art Association in New York.
